New Mayapur Temple
The quick development of Krishna consciousness in France between 1970 and 1974 required the acquisition of a rural property connected to the urban temple of Paris. It was necessary to house a growing number of devotees, including families, in favorable conditions for their spiritual fulfillment and the reception of the public.
In July 1974, after visiting several properties in France, Srila Prabhupada personally chose Oublaise. "This property will be very good for devotees," he said, and he immediately convinced the owner to give it to him at a good price. He used the proceeds of his books sale by the French devotees to make the payment himself.
Srila Prabhupada stayed for several days in New Mayapur during the summer of 1975. Our Sri Sri Gaura Nitai deities were installed on December 1975. It was in their honour that Srila Prabhupada decided to name this village New Mayapur. In August 1976 Srila Prabhupada installed our Sri Sri Krishna Balarama deities. Our Sri Sri Radha Govinda Madhava deities were installed in July 1979.
Our Sri Sri Krishna Balarama deities are the only deities remaining in mainland Europe. New Mayapur is the only rural community still belonging to ISKCON in mainland Europe visited by Srila Prabhupada.
Srila Prabhupada left impressions and strong instructions to his disciples during these stays. The atmosphere was simultaneously intense and relaxed, meditative and joyful. The devotees from all over Europe were all eyes and ears on Srila Prabhupada's every word and gesture, who delighted them with his affection for them and his intense absorption in the person of Krishna, His name, His form His dwelling, His pastime, and His mission in this world.
On August 3, 1976, he gave basic instructions for New Mayapura at an informal meeting, sitting in the grass surrounded by his disciples: "If you simply act as Krishna's servants, for Him, and if you think of Krishna, all your needs will be insured, do not worry. Where is the difficulty? "
